If I have a favorite time on the Green, it’s probably now.
Twenty years ago I requested permission to begin caring for the land because every year the lilies were whacked down to stubble just as they began to bloom. Why? To keep the weeds under control! So I waded in with my shovel and spent the whole summer digging mugwort out by the roots, digging the lilies too because their roots were tangled together. And putting the lily roots back into the ground.
So when the lilies bloom each year, that’s my reward:
Of course there’s more – a lot more!
Some are things I planted, some came up by themselves.
And all are welcome.
