If you came to the Green today

What would you see? Mud and dead leaves?

Or would you notice

The thickening crown of the elm tree where the buds are swelling?

And the big buds on the cornelian cherries?

Would you look closely enough to see the day lilies coming up, the wild strawberry leaves – and the vividly colored new growth on the hellebores?

The snowdrops and tulips and daffodils have declared themselves:

And here’s something completely new: one of our border logs has sprouted brown jelly fungus. When the weather is dry it shrivels up – but after rain it looks like this:

It’s not poisonous, but according to what I read online it “tastes like dirt”.
