Welcome Nicole L. Cicogna!
GallopNYC is thrilled to welcome new Executive Director, Nicole L. Cicogna! Nicole first learned about horses from her father, a NYC Mounted Police Officer. Over the last ten years, Nicole was the Executive Director of Hartley House, a nonprofit organization founded in 1897 to strengthen and serve the Hell’s Kitchen community in NYC, where she collaborated with the Board and staff to fulfill its mission, while increasing its capacity, expanding its programming, and diversifying its funding mix. Her work at Hartley House helped to serve those in the community by enriching their lives, expanding their opportunities, and building a sense of community. GallopNYC is honored to have Nicole join our team!
“The opportunity to lead GallopNYC in its next chapter is a dream, but it is also a
privilege. Our work is relevant and important, and I commit to all of you that I will be as
dedicated and brave as those we serve. Thank you all for your generous support over. I’ll see you at the barn!”
Our beautiful stables and home to 18 horses and ponies at GallopNYC Forest Hills, is now named Kershaw Stables in honor of our Co-Founder and first Executive Director, Alicia Kershaw. Alicia, a long-time horse lover and equestrian, was the force behind GallopNYC and using horses to improve the lives of New Yorkers with disabilities, so it is only fitting that this warm, welcoming, caring, environment now bears her name. Come visit Kershaw Stables, or better yet, volunteer here to help care for Popcorn, Daisy, Buddy, and all our other patient, steady therapeutic riding partners.
The Ride with Pride Horse Show – Our Biggest Year Yet!
At GallopNYC’s celebratory Horse Show in Central Park, riders demonstrated the abilities and the skills they mastered through their weekly therapeutic riding lessons. Honorary Judges who included elected officials, equestrians, and GallopNYC supporters presented each Ride with Pride Horse Show participant with a Championship Blue Ribbon. Watch the Ride with Pride Horse Show on NY1 here.
The festivities continued the following weekend with a fun-filled day of riding demonstrations, games, BBQ, and celebration at GallopNYC Forest Hills.
Katie Mak, a long-time devoted GallopNYC volunteer, and Soorya Anilkumar, a GallopNYC part-time employee and volunteer, both won Meringoff Scholarships. Soorya graduated from Queens High School for the Sciences at York College and will use her scholarship next year at Baruch. Katie graduated from Queens Metropolitan High School and is still in the midst of finalizing her college plans but is planning to study psychology. Both won on the strength of essays they submitted to the Meringoff Family Foundation that described the value of GallopNYC experience, and how GallopNYC has helped them prepare for their lives after high school. Congratulations to Katie and Soorya.
Marley is a bright young woman whose love for horses is undeniable. She looks forward to her weekly therapeutic riding lessons and riding her favorite horse, Buddy. Trotting is her favorite activity and she has developed enough coordination and balance to ride independently, without side walkers.
“My daughter Marley has been part of the GallopNYC community for over four years. I can’t begin to tell you the progress she has made and the confidence she has gained. She just adores the horses, the entire staff and volunteers, it has become her second family. I have three other children and they all feel that Marley and our family has found an amazing community in GallopNYC. Thank you!” – Lisa, Tony, Marley, Shayla, Keira and Jackie
