Empowering Accessibility: Collaborating for Inclusion in the Workplace
Addressing accessibility in the workplace is an essential aspect for corporations and businesses, regardless of their size. Recognizing this need, organizations are increasingly embracing the development of professional resource groups to provide support to employees and their families who have special needs or face challenges. Disability can touch the lives of every individual at some point, whether through personal experiences or connections with friends, family, or colleagues. A recent panel discussion, "How to Support Colleagues and their Families with Disabilities," co-hosted by GallopNYC, the EY AccessAbilities Network, and the Citi Disability Inclusion Network, explored the significance of building inclusive cultures and highlighted the power of collaboration between non-profit organizations and the corporate world. While 40 people were able to attend in person, the panel was viewed by 320 people who dialed in virtually.
GallopNYC utilizes therapeutic horsemanship to empower riders with disabilities in New York City. By offering this unique approach, we enable individuals to live fulfilling, independent, and productive lives. The organization's Vice Board Chair and Founder, Alicia Kershaw, played a pivotal role as the moderator of the panel discussion, while Executive Director Marcos Stafne, Ph.D., introduced how therapeutic horsemanship provides opportunities for program participants to grow their physical, emotional, and social skills. A GallopNYC rider and his family were also present to discuss the positive physical benefits that have helped improve both motivation and posture in the rider.
During the panel discussion, additional speakers from EY and Citi emphasized the importance of supporting efforts that promote diverse abilities within their respective organizations. They shared personal stories that had profoundly impacted their lives, showcasing the significance of individual experiences in driving change. Additionally, they highlighted the role of allies, emphasizing how anyone can contribute to creating an inclusive environment for people with disabilities.
The event exemplified the valuable collaboration that can occur between GallopNYC and the corporate world. By participating in panel discussions and similar initiatives, GallopNYC acts as a resource and catalyst for fostering inclusion within organizations. Special thanks go out to GallopNYC Board Member Arjun Saraswat (EY), who spearheaded this project, demonstrating the dedication of individuals within both nonprofit and corporate sectors.
Addressing accessibility in the workplace is crucial for promoting a more inclusive society. By collaborating with professional resource groups and hosting panel discussions, GallopNYC showcases the power of partnership between nonprofit organizations and the corporate world. Together, we can create supportive environments and empower individuals with disabilities to thrive in their personal and professional lives. Let us work hand in hand to embrace diversity and foster inclusion in all aspects of society.
